One simple act of love has changed the way people perceive me.
Falling in love with a man of distinction has altered the way I am viewed by others.
In the disability community I have somehow gained more credibility,
Many more insiders welcome me into their world.
Broader society unleashes stigma by association,
Questions and fears are transferred through the stares of strangers.
Friends and family share thoughts of confusion,
Concerned that I am with someone so “different.”
Through one simple act of love others try to redefine who I am in an attempt to understand the unexpected.
In their own minds they question, make assumptions, and laugh.
Sometimes my heart feels heavy with this reality
Until I look into the eyes of the one I love
and the weight is lifted as I see myself reflected back.
