Wheelchair Warriors
by Ross Altman
[from "Folksinger Americanus and Other Endangered Species" 1989]
They arrested Rosa Parks
When she refused to give her seat up to a white man.
She refused to moved to the back of the bus.
The Supreme Court changed the law
But it did no good for us.
We're still trying to get on the bus.
The year was 1960
Freedom Riders road the buses south
Black and white together riding Greyhound.
Twenty-nine years later,
There's still no room for us,
We're still trying to get on the bus.
[Chorus] Let us on the bus
We've waited long enough
We're tired of being told that we can't ride
They call us wheelchair warriors
We're kicking up some dust
We will keep on marching 'till you let us on the bus
We will keep on marching 'till you let us on the bus.
We've shared all the dreams
Of our sisters and brothers when they march
But we've always fought for someone else's rights.
Now who will march with us
When all we ask is justice?
We're still trying to get on the bus.
We'll not stop with transportation,
That's just where we're starting to fight,
Then like Dr. King we're marching on.
We don't march because we like it,
We march because we must.
We're still trying to get on the bus.
[Chorus repeats]
